What CA Means to Me

How has interdisciplinary work been important to your CA experience?

The interconnection between my courses has been my most positive experience at CA. I have never been in an English class that did not tie into my history class, and even my work in physics has found its way onto the stage with me in theatre class.

What have you learned about yourself through your academic work at CA?

As the work has gotten harder over the years, I have grown to understand just what makes me tick. My understanding of my strengths and weaknesses has allowed me to hone in on my interests.

What has been your single most intellectually challenging experience at CA?

Physics has been by far my most challenging experience. Trying to understand the intricacies of the subject while keeping up with the demanding course load has been my largest challenge.

What would be your ideal day at CA?

My ideal day would be composed of lots of history, theatre, ceramics, plus a rehearsal with my rock band.

Interests and Activities

Senior class president; junior class president; head, Concord Academy Model United Nations (CAMUN), Croquet Club, and Rock ’n’ Roll Club; theatre; journalism; political campaign volunteer

Of these, do you consider any a passion?

Volunteering for John Kerry two summers ago was one of the most interesting things I have ever done. I dig all things political and spending my whole summer in Boston helping out the campaign was a natural choice. I did not really do anything beyond grunt labor, but I realized how important all levels of involvement are. The canvassing that we did in New Hampshire made a huge difference in winning back the state for the Democrats. Most interesting was the constant buzz and conversation surrounding the political issues.

Have you done any coursework or projects that crossed disciplines?

In my senior year, I worked on a production of Tom Stoppard’s Travesties. It is a play that pulls immensely on history. I directed the show and it was the largest of the directing projects that I worked on over my time at CA. The show was a rewrite of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest set in the world of the displaced artist and intellectuals in Zurich during World War I. The interconnection between my courses has been the most positive experiences at CA. I have never been in an English class that did not tie into my history class, and even my work in physics has found its way on to the stage with me in theatre.
