What CA Means to Me
Gordie
Day Student
Cambridge, MA
Part of CA’s mission is to nurture a love of learning. What does love of learning mean to you?
To me, love of learning is being a student not because it is an obligation, but because you are genuinely interested in the subject. I have found that CA’s students often have a genuine love of learning, and CA’s flexible course schedule allows them to pursue what really inspires them. My advisor has been particularly helpful in promoting my own love of learning, steering me towards courses which will not only teach me, but courses which will inspire me and spark my interest at a higher level.
You’re involved in Amnesty International, Free Tibet, and other causes. What got you interested?
Much of my interest in Amnesty and Free Tibet has come from longtime family involvement in nonprofits. My father has worked with nonprofits. Both my sister, the former Amnesty International head at CA, and my mother have encouraged me to become more involved in charities. CA has fostered this interest by its devotion to community service and its support for a wide range of clubs and organizations.
How has the value CA places on a sense of humor affected your CA experience?
Humor is a huge aspect of my CA experience. There is rarely a time when I am with my friends when we are not cracking jokes. Most of the teachers also appreciate humor, and this brings a light air to the community.
Which courses at CA have most challenged or inspired you?
Spring semester of French 3 inspired me, especially our class discussions on French culture, particularly about French immigration and the social and racial issues surrounding it.
What has been your single favorite class? Why?
My favorite class so far has been Sophomore English. In the fall I loved reading Macbeth, and in the spring The Great Gatsby. The projects have not been just writing or reading assignments; some of the most enjoyable assignments have involved acting out scenes or writing poems.
What has been your most interesting assignment?
I really enjoyed my Film 1 parallel action project. I love filmmaking, and this project was one of the first where I could really experiment with ideas.
