What CA Means to Me

Henry

Day Student
Concord, MA

What have you learned from being a local Concord student in a school with peers from around the country and the world?

I don't see diversity as the bubbles on standardized tests, but as a diversity of thoughts, opinions, characteristics, and passions, which every Concord Academy student has. Being surrounded by such a diverse range of interests, passions, and abilities is the diversity that has the greatest affect on my education.

How has photography been an important component of your CA experience?

Coming to CA I had zero expectation of falling in love with an art form. I took Photo 1 my freshman fall because I knew the teacher. Now I’m taking Photo 3, and it's something I've really come to love. As an incoming freshman, I almost expected to be a stereotypical high school jock. The arts program is really almost too good. Even if I had no intention of getting involved with the arts, it was impossible not to.

How has your athletic experience at CA differed from that on other school, club, or town teams?

The community is very supportive of its athletes, and playing (and especially winning) in front of the home crowd is incredibly rewarding. In a school setting, as opposed to a town team, there is much more to play for: not just for the team, or the coach, or yourself, but for your school. Being able to express my pride for CA on the athletics fields has been a true honor.

Which courses at CA most challenged you or inspired you?

Physics, by far. It's tested a whole new set of skills, combining math with application and a whole slew of equations. The class has forced me to put in the extra hours and put my nose hard to the grindstone—and still live with not reaching or exceeding my usual expectations.

Interests and Activities

Captain, varsity baseball and soccer teams; cofounder, Chivalrous Order of Concord Academy; cohead, Athletics Council; photography

Of these, do you consider any a passion?

Baseball is, to date, my life's passion. Whenever I am on the field, any stressor immediately disappears. Nothing is as natural to me as throwing a ball or swinging a bat.
